The harder side of puppy training

The swing bridge was wonderful for balance and under the feet movement.

When Joy from The Joys of Assistance Dogs told me the puppies were taking their first outing to the park, I knew I had to be there.

The puppies first went down the stairs and then they had to climb back up them.

Of course, it was during work, so when I saw my boss that morning, I told him I was either going in for brain surgery or a root canal, but I was slipping out of the office for a couple of hours.

Walking on the ledge was just another balance exercise

They were amazing to watch, nearly fearless as they each tackled a new task.

Before any children arrived to play in the park, the puppies did their paces on the playground equipment. It makes sense, playground equipment is developed now so that young children learn to go up and down stairs, balance on the swing bridge, climb… why wouldn’t it be perfect for puppies? And, then, it was play time in the park.

These little guys are so smart and so eager to please, it will be a joy to watch them grow through the lens.

Who’s watching who?

These pups were cute. I sat down in the grass as I was taking pictures and before I knew it, they were climbing on me as if I were a mountain. We were all soaking wet from the grass before we were done. It was so much fun. How dare Joy say it was time for them to go!

To the beach

The beach is that way

Oh woe is me, this is my last Friday of vacation. Karen took the day off, the dogs drew bully stix and Crystal got the short one. Her turn for a road trip and she lead the way to the beach.

Crystal

There was a weather advisory for high waves, exciting for me but Crystal wasn’t so sure. This is one of my favorite beaches and I don’t remember the tide coming in as far as it did today.

Run for dry ground

Once we got onto the sand there wasn’t a safe place to stand. We were on constant watch for sneaker waves. The sun was in and out of the clouds the entire time we were there.

I did manage to get Crystal to stand still long enough during a brief patch of sun and I thanked the seagull that flew by and grabbed her attention.

Oh how I love the coast, it was a beautiful trip out there.

Flight of the Belli girl

Cinderella

I loved this series of the Belli girl and thought I would throw the rest of them up on the blog.

She looks so darn buff.

And I am fairly certain she have the bones of a bird, light as a feather.

And the stealth of a bucking bronco.

The grace of a ballerina.

When I saw this one coming at me, I figured I had better put down the camera. See the resemblance to a linebacker?

Losing Buddy this week has kinda taken the stuffing out of me. I can’t seem to get out of my own way.

The red head however, is doing his best to make everything better.

Best holiday ever

Thanksgiving day, 2011

I had a window on Thanksgiving day, a window with something other than clouds and rain and wind. We were out of bed in a flash to enjoy the sunrise.

Minnie

Minnie couldn’t believe her eyes, what on earth was that bright ball?

The turkey

I do have a bit of a confession. I was married for 22 years and I never once cooked a turkey. For the last 10 years, I’ve avoided the topic until this year when Karen decided she wanted to do a turkey for dinner. In my best enthusiastic voice, I reassured her that it was a grand idea.

Hind-sight being 20/20, it really was a great idea. Karen spent a great deal of time in the dreaded kitchen and the whole meal was fabulous.

Buddy

Buddy on the other hand, was really annoyed that he had been baby-gated out of the kitchen. Seriously, what was Karen thinking. Buddy is one of the official taste-testers.

Crystal, Talley, Buddy

Who wants the drumstick?

Crystal, Talley, Buddy

Clearly, Buddy thought that since he is the senior member of the pack he should have it. Plus, he’s the tallest of the three, a definite advantage.

The reality is, nobody got the drumstick, but they all got a little bit of turkey with their kibble for dinner.

Crystal and Barney

A fabulous meal that took all morning to prepare was gone in a flash and we couldn’t believe how much we ate.

Flocko

The best that we could do at that point was to waddle into the bedroom and settle down for a happy nappy.

Moose

Of course, no meal is complete without a little desert with our whip cream.

Timber

And did we have left-overs for breakfast you might ask?

Nope, we scrambled out of bed to meet Timber. A one-year old gorgeous, energetic and playful borzoi. I have a few other photos of him here.

The Flo Zone

Flo

Nope. It isn’t a nick name. It isn’t some military target. And it isn’t the distance from the beer tap to the cup.

The Flo Zone is a moving, fluffy, four-legged territory. The territory is hers’ and she isn’t crazy about sharing.

We’ve all grown accustom to the Flo Zone. Every evening after her last run she goes from bed to bed, passively moving each dog from their comfort and slumber.

A gaze of mischief

I don’t think I have ever heard a snarl or even seen a lip curl from her. Instead, she circles the bed, puts one paw on and then another until her victim moves.

Sadly, she rarely lays down but instead moves onto the next dog and repeats the process.

Buddy spent the day resting peacefully beside my desk. He strolled out for a few breaks, but would come right back to the cushion beside me.

In her defense, I’m sure that all she heard was “Flo, blah blah blah blah, Buddy blah blah blah blah blah.”

Geez she made me mad when she moved him. I just couldn’t get their fast enough.

I was ready to put her on a slow boat back to the racing kennel, broken hock or not.

I can only hope she saw the light.

Because she at least pretended to listen to me as I ranted and raved for about 10 minutes on why Buddy can no longer be her target.

Sheesh! I’m spending as much in hair color these days as I am kibble.

The dominant gene

Hunters, probably around 1916

For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about dogs. I love all furry critters, but dogs have a strong-hold on my heart. I always wondered why, that was until I got a hold of few old family albums and shoe boxes. I don’t know who these people were, they were in my grandmother’s album surrounded by pictures with dates from 1912 to 1918.

I wonder if this gorgeous hound dog had a place at the foot of the bed. I’m going to pretend he did.

Jake, my dad and Buster

My grandmother on my dad’s side was a great photo labeler. This is my dad, they called him Maurice. The photo was labeled Maurice, 9 months and Buster. Buster must have been a much loved farm dog. Dad’s family homesteaded a wheat farm just outside of Oshkosh, Nebraska. Dad was born in 1922, so this was taken in 1923.

My dad on a riding toy with Bruno

According to grandma, dad was 18 months old here. Now I’m impressed. My grandparents not only marked my dad’s age milestones on film, but they also captured the dogs.

Maybe I’m not so much of a black sheep as I thought.

Photo labeled "Coyote truck"

Hark! Two dogs again. My dad is driving, his sister Lela Mae is riding shot gun and his younger sister Wanda is in the back. I’m guessing dad is probably about 17, so this photo was taken in about 1939.

Wanda and Lela Mae

Wanda is the young girl holding the dog. She has got to be my kindred spirit. Every picture I have found of her includes a dog. As a young girl, I remember visiting their house. She had a pair of pekingese then. I’m guessing around 1942 for this one.

Going off to war

My dad was a bomber pilot in WWII. This picture was taken the day before he left. I’m pretty sure I remember being told that he enlisted when he was 19, so this was probably around 1941. Note, dear old Aunt Wanda has her dog. I told you she must be my kindred spirit.

Mom and Yip

Now my mother loved her dogs too. This is Yip and as a young girl, I must have heard 100 stories about this dog. He was my mom’s guardian protector. He was there through her teenage years and beyond. I’m thinking about 1940 for this one.

The wedding day

November 7, 1943. Mom and dad are the happy couple in the middle, my mom’s dad on the end and I think the two older women might be mom’s aunts. And… yes, a dog. I bet that is Yip. Mom left with dad, so grandma and grandpa must have had dog duty while she was gone. Dad flew in the European theater and when he left, she came back to Nebraska.

Muffin

I was an oops and an afterthought. My brother and sister were nearly grown when I surprised the whole damn family. There are probably lots of dogs that I don’t even know the history about.

None the less, that adorable poodle back there with me is Muffin. I got him as a tiny puppy and he lived to be nearly 20 years old. This was taken in about 1973.

Megan, Holly, Sadie and Caleb

Once I got married, if I had anything to say about it, we were going to have a dog. These cute little iggies are Sadie and Caleb. They are living with my older daughter Megan now. And I’d like to do a shout out for Megan, her birthday is tomorrow. Maybe I should dig out some old bathtub photos. 2001.

Fonzi

And in 2002 I adopted my first greyhound, Fonzi. I totally credit Sadie and Caleb for this.

Not only did Fonzi introduce me to the digital age, but also to the wonderful world of greyhounds.

The rest is all history. I only had to wade through a few photo albums and shoe boxes to find these. So sorry for my daughters who will have to wade though terabytes and multiple hard drives to scavenge for pictures.

I now believe my love for dogs is thoroughly embedded in my genes and since both of my daughters each have two dogs, it must be a dominant gene.

‘Tis the season

Skirvee

I do love this time of year. The nights and mornings are cool and the day warms up perfectly. For many of my friends and family, anticipation of their favorite sport is common conversation during the week.

The excitement makes them all tingly and they are floating on air.

Yes, it is football season. And it is oh so exciting when footballs fall from the sky.

Of course, life is not always home runs, three-pointers and touchdowns. Some days, you just fumble.

But you pick up the ball and start running.

And when it is good, you get your touchdown, it’s a good thing to celebrate and spike that ball into the ground.

And look forward to a hot date with a cheerleader.

Happy week-end everyone. Please join us for the Saturday Pet Blog Hop!

Celebration in the gardens

Roxy

Roxy, there is a rumor going around. Something about a very happy birthday?

Care to expand on that girlfriend? Just how many candles are you gonna have to blow out?

Oh, a lady never tells her age. How silly of me, I forgot.

You’ll always be a puppy to us, come on Roxy, let’s tell your friends, just how old are you gonna be on Saturday, September 17?

15 years young!

Happy birthday honey girl.

And umm Roxy, it is time for the Saturday Pet Blog Hop. I’m gonna tell everyone that stops by just how old you are. Sorry, I can’t help myself.

Here’s the rules, join on in.
